Going Once, Going Twice – Sold! How to Prepare for the D2R Auction

So you’ve heard all about A Date 2 Remember’s crown jewel fashion show and live auction to benefit five Columbus area nonprofit organizations. But you may also be wondering, “what exactly is this auction and what do I have to do to win it?” Glad you asked!

At D2R ’14 this Sat., Feb. 22 at Lifestyle Communities Pavilion, you’ll have an opportunity to bid on 30 extravagant experience packages built from products and services donated to us from area businesses. You’ll find events, activities, and services bundled together in super-sized ensembles for embarking on the ultimate thrill ride. From outdoor adventures to live sports to captivating tourist escapades, our experience packages are designed to tap into your most passionate interests.

But before you decide to bid on Saturday night, we encourage you to actually do some planning in advance. To get you ready for all the fast-paced action, our D2R veteran auctioneer, Larry Woods, offers some simple tips to help you emerge victoriously in possession of your ideal experience package – and feel good about it.

D2R Larry Renea Corrine

1. Know your financial limits and set spending boundaries.

The best practice for preparing for any auction is determining how much money you want to spend, Woods explains. Check out the event package lineup below so you know what your target package’s value is. Factor in an extra 10-percent in case the package goes higher than expected, or you need some extra cash to beat out a close competitor.

“Have a budget when you go there so you know how much money you’re going to spend, (and) so you don’t get caught up in all the excitement of the evening,” Woods says.

2. Prioritize your top auction list targets to avoid buyer’s remorse.

Not only is it important to know how much you want to spend – but you should know exactly what is out there to buy. More importantly, determine what you are going to bid on before you even arrive at the venue, or you could end up in a dangerous predicament, Woods warns.

If you show up with little to no knowledge of what is up for bid, you run the risk of getting caught up in all the action and throwing your paddle in the ring – only to regret your decision later if you win but don’t really want the package. That can be a costly mistake as most D2R experience packages start at a few hundred dollars – a steep price to pay for a bid-on-the-whim moment.

Woods says that auction winners often experience buyers remorse “when they have not done their research, have not done their homework, did not know what they were buying…and then in the next day or the next hour, or the next 15 minutes, they regret that they bought it. That’s one of the main things that happen at auctions.”

3. Remember at all times that A Date 2 Remember auction winners are legally obligated to pay for their items.

A Date 2 Remember is tons of fun – but we are all business about raising money for our charity beneficiaries. By entering an auction bid, you are agreeing to enter into a legal contract with the Columbus Young Professionals Club, Woods says, to pay for the item if you win. It might sound like fun to join in all the action – and it is. Just remember that you are expected to cash out before the event ends if you are victorious – and let that steer your decision as to whether you should raise your paddle.

4. Keep cool and calm to stay focused in the heat of the moment.

It’s easy to get distracted in an auction. The auctioneer’s mouth is moving a mile a minute. The dollar amount escalates in rapid rhythm. Ego comes into play. The crowd swoons as the intensity elevates.

When you’re in the hunt for an auction item, don’t pay attention to any of those things, Woods recommends. Instead, listen for the numbering system to stay focused on the highest dollar amount so you don’t lose track of the money needed to win. Looking for an inside edge? Wait until the end when everyone else has bid “and then right before the auctioneer says ‘Sold’ – that’s when you put your hand up…and sometimes that will scare off a previous bidder if somebody new jumps in,” Woods says.

Now that you know how to prepare, check out our lineup of phenomenal experience packages up for bid this Sat, Feb. 22 with all net proceeds benefiting our community. Happy hunting – and good luck!
